SUMMARY

 

The present case-control study was carried out at Rizgari Teaching Hospital in the Hawler City to demonstrate some immunological, hematological, biochemical, molecular and oxidative parameters in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. This study was accomplished during the period from September 2015 to January 2016.

After performing the exclusion and inclusion criteria, eighty male persons were participated in this study. Participants were divided into two groups. First group includes forty MS patients. The second group consisted of forty healthy persons, it was considered as a control for statistical comparison. The mean age of the MS patients was (34.85 ± 1.442 years), and of the control group was (32.25 ± 1.375 years); yielding no statistically significant difference in their ages.

The results showed that patients with MS had a highly significant higher Interleukin-23 (IL-23) (82.78 ± 18.11 pg/ml) compared to the healthy controls (21.11 ± 3.582 pg/ml). Interleukin-10 (IL-10) was a highly significant increased in MS patients (3.539 ± 0.548 pg/ml) compared to healthy controls (1.656 ± 0.249 pg/ml).

A highly significant increase in serum malondialdehyde (MDA) (5.295 ± 0.335 µmol/L vs. 4.120 ± 0.250 µmol/L), but a highly significant decrease in serum copper (Cu⁺²) (6.384 ± 0.799 µmol/L vs. 13.11 ± 1.814 µmol/L) serum nitric oxide (NO) (5.333 ± 0.907 µmol/L vs. 8.666 ± 1.141 µmol/L),  were observed in MS patients when compared with healthy controls.

A significant increase in total leukocyte counts (TLCs) (7.039 ± 0.261 10³/µL vs. 6.266 ± 0.139 10³/µL), neutrophils (4.338 ± 0.211 10³/µL vs. 3.764 ± 0.113 10³/µL), lymphocytes (2.001 ± 0.10810³/µL vs. 1.192 ± 0.084 10³/µL), monocytes (0.706 ± 0.037 10³/µL vs. 0.604 ± 0.026 10³/µL)were observed in MS patients when compared with healthy controls, but no significant variations were found in eosinophils (0.181 ± 0.024 10³/µL vs. 0.141 ± 0.015 10³/µL); however, an extremely significant decrease in platelet counts (194.7 ± 6.900 10³/µL vs. 235.2 ± 8.314 10³/µL) and basophil counts (0.013 ± 0.001 10³/µL vs. 0.050 ± 0.00610³/µL), were recorded in MS patients when compared with healthy controls.

The value of serum circulating creatinine in MS patients (0.858 ± 0.041 mg/dl) was an extremely significant higher than that recorded in controls (0.546 ± 0.039 mg/dl). Conversely, to what observed for creatinines, estimated Glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was an extremely significant lower (113.0 ± 4.780 ml/min/1.73 m²), if compared to the eGFR of controls (138.0 ± 10.22  ml/min/1.73 m²). The mean serum level of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25 (OH) D) in MS and control groups were (44.66 ± 3.719 nmol/l) and (68.92 ± 3.392 nmol/l) respectively, and it showed an extremely significant difference between them.

The results showed that patients with MS had an extremely significant higher in high sensitive C-reactive proteins (hs-CRP) level (2.015 ± 0.217 mg/L vs. 1.120 ± 0.113 mg/L) when compared with healthy controls.

 

Also, the results showed that the frequency of human leukocyte antigen- DQB1*0602 (HLA-DQB1*0602) was an extremelysignificant higher in MS patients than controls. The presence of HLA-DQB1*0602 allele in control subjects was 37.50% and in MS patients was 87.50% (p< 0.001, OR=11.67, RR=2.33).
