Title of the seminar: “The Leadership Position of Women in Mesopotamia” By: Assistant Prof. Dr. Aram Jalal Hasan - Dep. of Archeology - Collage of Arts Date and duration: 12/2/2025, (1 Hour) Place: Farhadi Hall - Collage of Arts Related SDGs: Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls Abstract: Women represent the heart of the family and the pillar of human society, and their important role began to become clear through their primary function as a mother and a source of life and its continuity. Women had a leadership role in Mesopotamian society in the field of civilization, culture, religion, etc. Princess Enhedonna was a priestess of (THE MOON GOD NANNAR) in the city of Ur during the reign of her father, Sharrukin Sargon of Akkad (2371-2316 BC) and she used to sing a sad religious hymn to the tunes of a harp played by male and female musicians in the temple carrying the concepts of rituals of sanctifying the goddess Inanna. Princess Enhedonna was worthy of attention as she was the first to emerge in the field of literature, writing and composition, as she is the author of the long Sumerian poem praising (the lady of all divine laws) which she composed in praise of the goddess Inanna/Ishtar. Thus, she was considered the first female writer and author in history.
