In August 2024, an interview will be conducted with Rudaw TV to discuss the sources of air pollution in Erbil city, their impact on public health, and the challenges in addressing this growing environmental concern. The discussion will highlight the primary contributors to air pollution, including vehicle emissions, industrial activities, power generation from diesel generators, waste burning, and dust storms, which collectively deteriorate air quality and pose serious health risks.
We will explore how these pollutants contribute to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and other health complications, particularly among children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions. Pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and carbon monoxide (CO) have been linked to lung diseases, heart attacks, and reduced life expectancy.
Additionally, the interview will address the challenges in mitigating air pollution in Erbil, including the lack of strict emissions regulations, limited public transportation options, and urban expansion leading to increased traffic congestion. We will also discuss potential solutions, such as implementing air quality monitoring systems, transitioning to renewable energy sources, enforcing stricter emissions standards, and promoting green urban planning.
This discussion aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 – Climate Action, emphasizing the urgent need for policies that reduce air pollution, enhance climate resilience, and promote sustainable urban development. Through this interview, we aim to raise awareness about the importance of collective action—from the government, industries, and individuals—to improve air quality and create a healthier environment for Erbil’s residents.
